It was built by Yusuf I and it was called "Bib Axarea" or esplanade's gate. It is one of the the main entrances to the complex of the Alhambra.
This square received this name because of the cisterns that were built by Count of Tendilla in the gully between the Alcazaba and the palaces.
This gate is supposed to be one of the oldest constructions of the Alhambra, it could date from the period of Mohammed II.
The Emperor ordered the construction of the palace next to the Alhambra in order to enjoy its wonders. The architect in charge of the works was Pedro Machuca. Its circular patio is unique.
